Is Northern Ireland safe? The 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland affects few tourist. Derry is a lively tourist destination. UN International Crime Victimization Survey says that Northern Ireland has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Road Signs Road signs in Ireland are either in Irish or English. However, Gaeltacht areas or the Irish speaking areas, signs are in Irish only. In Northern Ireland, signs are displayed in English-metric system, while most part of the country is converting to the new metric system. Smoking Areas in Ireland Pubs in Republic of Ireland banned smoking, as well in their café's and restaurants, while it is allowed in Northern Ireland. In the privacy of hotel rooms and outdoors is legal, though. Currency Pound Sterling in Northern Ireland and the Euro in the Republic of Ireland are used for currencies. Less ATM's are available in the countryside but available in most cities. The ATMs are available if you have Cirrus/MasterCard or Visa. Major credit cards are accepted in most places. Insurance It is advisable to have insurance while travelling in the Emerald Isle. But you have to check your insurance carrier about the coverage of your travelling. Driving Left-hand drive side of the road is the driving method in Ireland. You can only drive if you have a valid legal driver's license. Children under four years old have child restraint and seat belt is required for all the passengers. There are major clearout on drunk driving and speeding in Ireland. Countryside roads are dangerously winding and narrow, so you have to be extra careful. Climate It rains most of the time. Showers are short and the temperature is mild. Summer temperature ranges from 60-70° F, spring and fall have 65° F. In winter, it is often in mid-40° F and it rarely snows. Pubs and Stores Banks opens at 10 in the morning and closes at 4 pm (5pm in Dublin) Monday to Friday. Banks closes for lunch (12:30 pm - 1:30 pm) in small towns. Most pubs are open until 2 in the morning. And most stores are open from 9 in the morning to 6 pm, Monday to Fridays. Tipping Ireland's customary tip ranges from 10 to 20 percent. Restaurants and hotels include it as service charge on the bill or menu. Tipping in pubs is not usual unless you require table service; while it is a good idea to tip cab drivers, porters, hairdressers, and etc. Taxes In Ireland, there is a Value Added Tax (VAT) that could be 21% higher than some goods. Restaurants have 12% tax. But you may entitle to tax refund as a non-European Union visitor if you buy goods from stores displaying 'Tax Free Shopping'. Pets Bringing a pet in Ireland is complicated. Your pet must spend at least six months in approved quarantine premises, and the pet should have an anti- rabies vaccine during the quarantine. The rule is the same for both Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.
